When I got home late on Boxing Day, there was a message from Leo on the house phone.

“I didn’t try your mobile—I knew you’d only cut me off. Look…” He paused. “I’m not going to make excuses, but I have to explain. I’ll come around on the twenty-eighth. Bye.”

Oh will you, I thought savagely. Then I shall be out.

But that was before I remembered his jacket. The one he’d spilled a cappuccino over and left behind by mistake. And I, doting mug that I was, had taken it to the cleaner’s and forgotten to give it back to him. If you look hard enough, there’s always a crumb of comfort somewhere.
